Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
